Encouraging the Arts in Our Midst

Why Join the Arts Council?

The Arts Council encourages everyone to participate in the arts by sharing their talents and seeks to nurture a creative exchange between and among the various artists in our midst and in turn benefit the community at large.

Goals of the Hampshire County Arts Council include:

  • Increasing local opportunities for the display of visual artworks – see our AIPP page under Visual Arts and the Spring Fine Arts Show
  • Presentation of the performing arts – music, theatre, dance – see our Performing Arts Page
  • Encouraging writers groups and the publication and public readings of literary works – see our Literary Arts Page
  • Reaching out to children in all of the arts

The Arts Council organizes arts education programs for those active in specific arts, for local children and for the community at large to expand appreciation for and understanding of the arts.

The Arts Council has a history of:

  • Presenting a wide variety of musical performers in concert throughout the year, including free summer Concerts on the Lawn, a coffee house, open mikes and community square dances.
  • Organizing exhibits of local visual artists’ work, the Artist in Public Places project, the Spring Fine Arts Show as well as periodic Art Auctions.
  • Offering Summer Art Camp for Hampshire County children.
  • Hosting book signings by local authors, poets & illustrators, dramatic readings, poetry readings, public performances and school performances and workshops.
  • Producing theater programs.
  • Sponsoring arts events for elementary and middle school students.
  • Assisting with the Mountain Rhapsodies program at the WV Schools for the Deaf & Blind.
  • Donating art books to the Hampshire County Library.
  • Organizing sketch group outings and other art classes.
  • Serving as the organizational umbrella for the Ice Mountain Writers and encouraged the formation of a local crafters guild.

We continue to:

  • Publish a monthly newsletter to inform members about coming activities and opportunities, and events of interest in nearby communities, to profile local artists, and to share information about resources. Sign up for ArtScene on this page!
  • Maintain a website (www.hampshirearts.org) to enhance communication and access to the arts.
  • Issue frequent Arts Zaps to share information about art activities and opportunities coming in the near future.
